Dinner with friends

Start before the thread gets long

Restaurant recommendations, availability, and reservation details often end up in different messages. Start a named huddl for the dinner, then share its invitation link with the friends you want to include. You can add places and times after creating it.

Make the first request small: ask for availability on two evenings and a reaction to a few restaurants. Tell people the approximate budget and when you hope to book. That gives the group enough context to answer without making the organizer guess.

A practical dinner workflow

Huddl plan recommendations in the current app, using a fictional Saturday picnic example
Example: plan recommendations for a fictional Saturday picnic in the current Huddl app.
  1. Name the huddl and describe the kind of dinner you have in mind.
  2. Suggest two or three restaurants and workable dates.
  3. Ask about food, access, budget, and travel needs in the shared conversation.
  4. Settle on a place and time, then collect RSVPs for that plan.
  5. Give the reservation task an owner and share the booking name and arrival details.

Example: six people, one reservation

Suppose six friends are considering Friday or Saturday. One works late on Friday, and another needs vegetarian options. A Saturday venue with a broad menu may be a better fit than Friday’s most popular suggestion. Check availability directly with the restaurant before committing.

Once a table is booked, put “Saturday, 7:30 p.m., reservation under Sam” in the huddl conversation and check that the concrete plan has the matching place and time. People joining the discussion later should not have to reconstruct that from a poll.

Prevent the predictable surprises

  • Do not count a restaurant reaction as a dinner RSVP.
  • Check deposits, cancellation conditions, and the final headcount before booking.
  • Make the reservation name and exact entrance easy to find.
  • If the venue changes, ask people to acknowledge the new location.
